One of the coolest and most stylish ways to make an outfit work is tonal dressing, this means dressing from head-to-toe using just one color or multiple shades of one color. It’s an easy way to make an outfit look polished and fashion-forward. Here are a few tricks how to make tonal dressing work.
Playing with different textures
Mixing different fabrics and textures adds contrast and interest to an outfit. Think pairing a chunky knit with a lightweight silk top and a leather skirt, all items picked from the same color family to make a harmonious look. I styled a neutral look pairing a faux fur coat with a ruched top and a tulle skirt.
Mix different shades of the same hue
A tonal outfit can also mean mixing tones from one color family. A head-to-toe look can be styled from any color, beige, green, blue, red, yellow, white… just pick your favorite color and build your look around that color. Here I combined a pale pink top with a deep red skirt and boots. When you pick the shades from one hue, it’s guaranteed that the outfit will look balanced and flattering as the shades will perfectly match together.
Go for suiting
Suits are maybe the easiest way to try tonal dressing. A suit is a smart choice and never goes out of style, it’s practical as well as stylish. Go bold and wear just a bra underneath or style with a tee in a similar tone. Finish the look with sneakers for a relaxed touch and with heels for a formal look.
